On our way to getting ‘stamp’ of approval

Monday, July 11th, 2011

With our Microsoft partnership renewal due in September, the past few weeks have seen everyone at SmarterWays busily swotting up and revising for our Microsoft exams.

In the past we have simply been just ‘Microsoft registered partners’ however with an ever-expanding team, we want to upgrade our partnership and our services to our customers and so gaining gold or silver partner status will show just how qualified the SmarterWays staff really are. Our new partnership status will also allow us to compete with some of our much bigger competitors.

Our aim is to provide the most cost-effective solutions and products, we make sure that we always stay on top of the latest innovations in technology and do this by taking regular exams and keeping up-to-date with the latest of the Microsoft products.

With an expanding list of customers, comes an expanding team of SmarterWays technicians.

Not only are we looking to develop our relationship with Microsoft through gaining an accredited partnership status but we are also looking to invest in staffing. The latest government budget, although not generous to some sectors, was generous to the IT sector and that has meant that we are able to benefit from the Microsoft Apprenticeship scheme – we are currently looking to recruit a young apprentice that will spend some time on the job with us and the rest of the time in the classroom learning all the skills needed to be a certified technician and be able to provide our customers with the best service possible.

There are many benefits of being a Microsoft partner; receive expert advice and guidance from Microsoft consultants for training, technical pre-sales and delivery support. Not just this but being partnered and associated with Microsoft adds legitimacy to a company and what we can do.

Passing the Microsoft exams are crucial in showing that we are confident in service offering and fully clued up on what we actually offer people – all sectors of the business are involved in our membership renewal, including all of the technicians, the directors and the sales and marketing team.

As partners, it is incredibly important for everybody in SmarterWays to have a good knowledge about Microsoft.

After six years of hard work, SmarterWays are now an established company and we are incredibly confident in the services that we can offer our customers. We have a team full of experts with over 50 years combined experience in the IT sector so we are certain of the solutions we can offer. With over 100 servers under our belt and even more desktop support clients, we are more than confident in our abilities to provide a great service to businesses, schools, sports clubs and many more.

Just recently the SmarterWays team have been working extremely hard to achieve the Microsoft education reseller status and we have successfully managed to gain it. As part of our strategy for growth, we are now applying for some great tenders and contracts for bigger companies and organisations. The ‘Authorised Education Reseller’ certificate means that we can sell Microsoft software at academic and accessible prices to schools, colleges, universities, public libraries and other charitable bodies.

Whatever facility you may be, school, university, library or another, by allowing SmarterWays to provide your IT support, you will benefit greatly by saving money – the Microsoft programme allows us to benefit from some great savings and whatever we save, we make sure we pass onto our customers. We provide whichever Microsoft package you prefer, from Office to Vista, our technicians have great experience and knowledge about all Microsoft products and can advise you on which are most suitable for your organisation.

As part of our latest mission to become an active business within our local Burton community and surrounding areas we are very keen to start providing support for our local schools, colleges and others. We want to focus on the younger generations and put our years of knowledge and experience to good use. Now as fully qualified education resellers, we have the abilities to sell and advise you about the best solutions for your IT.

Please get in touch to find out more about what we could do for you.

Are you encrypted?

Monday, May 16th, 2011

Encryption for laptops and hard drives has been around for many years however it is still largely unused by companies to help secure data and prevent misuse.

Dell commissioned a survey in 2008 that showed that thousands of laptops are lost every week in the busy airports around the world. In London Heathrow alone, over 900 laptops were being lost. Worryingly around 40% of people said that their data was backed up and even more worryingly, only 10% of those surveyed employed any sort of secure full disk encryption to protect their data. Not only are over 900 laptops lost… so is all of their data and information worth in some cases, millions.

Encryption means converting information using a code that prevents it being understood by anyone who isn’t authorised to read it. Files, emails, even whole hard disks can be encrypted.

Encrypting email and files means that only authorised users are allowed to access them. This can be a powerful guarantee of privacy and security.

When emails are encrypted you get the additional benefit of being able to validate who sent the message and check that it hasn’t been tampered with en route.

Encryption is also used for ecommerce, wireless networking security and remote access to prevent eavesdropping andspoofing.

There are lots of different techniques for encryption. The stronger the encryption the harder it is for a hacker to decrypt the code using a computer. The strongest codes are, for all intents and purposes, unbreakable but simpler kinds of encryption can be broken using a regular PC with the right tools.

Implementing encrypted email or encrypted files will take a little time and can be technically demanding. However, for information that needs to be kept completely secure, encryption is the only way to go. We can help you overcome these barriers with our qualified and experienced SmarterWays technical team who can offer you secure encryption options for your digital assets. Some of these include:

  • Instant protection – deployed in days, easy to install, with minimal impact on IT staff
  • Expert implementation by a team of certified information system security professionals
  • Guaranteed password recovery
  • Complete control – centralised management of security functions and policies
  • Less hassle for you, as we provide 24/7/365 availability for user and technical support
  • Lower TCO, cost flexibility – no expensive data centres or investment in hardware/software and charged on per user per month
  • A green solution – run from efficient servers in environmentally friendly data centres

If this is something that interests you, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Based in Burton upon Trent, Staffordshire, our SmarterWays IT support team can help you choose the right broadband solution for the remote/home offices, making sure that hardware is installed to securely connect these offices back to your main office so that people working in them have full access to internal IT resources, just as if they were in the office.

The SmarterWays IT support team have grasped and emerging technologies and used them to provide real tangible benefits for our customers and to drum home the technical competence of the business.

At SmarterWays, Burton on Trent, Staffordshire, our IT support and managing team have become extremely aware of the changing lifestyle patterns of workers and the demands workers have to work from home and SmarterWays have worked to promote remote working to fit in with such demands. Being a family run business with two young children, the directors of SmarterWays appreciate the  work/life balance and the importance of being able to spend time with family. This has influenced the way in which staff work and the directors are incredibly flexible about staff working from home.

SmarterWays, Staffordshire realised the importance of this issue and the IT support team adapted and specialised the SmarterWays remote worker and support solutions to be able to cater for such issues. With this IT and technology, employees are able to work from home with the same server access and phone systems as at the office.
